2022 Payroll Deduction Grant Recipients

Hands on History Partnership with Berea Historical Society
William Boone, Berea Midpark High School - $1,000
Studies have shown that students are more likely to engage in history studies when they see how it connects to them and the locality they reside in. This project will create an experience that allows students to see the connection between the national historical events they study and local history. Mr. Boone will be a liaison between the Berea-Midpark History Department and the Berea Historical Society to create these "hands on" history experiences. This grant will fund class and club trips to the Berea Historical Society to create unique historical learning experiences for our students. (For example, students could see how local newspapers reported local experiences that connect to national events such as World War II and the Great Depression. They would do this by actually using the newspapers in the archives.) ALL BMHS high school students will benefit from this grant because American history is a required course to graduate.

Physical Education Department Climbing Wall
Aaron Scheiferstein, Brook Park Elementary - $6,150
The funds from this grant will add a 10' Ultratraverse Climbing Wall to the gymnasium at BPE. This will complement the physical education curriculum with an activity that will build confidence, improve students muscular endurance, and be fun. This addition will also meet the requirements of Ohio Physical Education State Standards 3, 4, and 5.  All students (900+) from preschool through fourth grade will utilize the climbing wall.

The Walking Club
Megan Peters, Big Creek Elementary - $450
The walking club is designed to keep kids active and give them goals to achieve. It helps reduce playground hassles and improve focus and concentration in the classroom. There are many benefits to staying active to will also enhance the learning environment. As a result, Ms. Peters is using this grant to provide students an opportunity to be active during recess. She has been teaching for 18 years and has observed that kids often struggle to play and interact in positive ways on the playground. The Walking Club will give them something to do with their friends that is not competitive, easy to participate in, and has attainable goals. The program will be piloted with 3rd graders.

Magnet Boards
Amy Murray, Grindstone Elementary - $400
This grant will purchase a class set of magnet boards to conduct writing, reading and math activities in Ms. Murray’s classroom. Magnet boards are a wonderful learning tool in primary classrooms because you can do so many educational activities with them. Kindergarten students will benefit from these fun learning tools because there are countless activities they can be utilized for. Some examples are: developing/enhancing drawing skills and adding details, practicing numbers and counting ("Draw 14 circles" or "write the number 19"), practicing letters and letter sounds ("write the letter that makes the sound /b/"), learning beginning and ending sounds (student writes the word cat, teacher says "erase the letter c and replace it with a b, what is the new word?" or student writes the word cat, teacher says "erase the letter t and replace it with a p, what is the new word?"). Approximately 20 students each year will benefit.
