2022 Enrichment Grant Recipients

AVID
Anthony Santori, Berea-Midpark High School - $ 1,000
College/Tech program that works with students who tend to be 1st generation college applicants. Teaches college prep with notes, organization, test taking, etc. We would like to purchase whiteboards to use during our tutorial sessions. With our growing population of kids in the program, we need more whiteboards. Some of the existing whiteboards also need to be replaced.

Burris Behavior Bucks
Russ Krivak, Snow School - $2,500
Students will have the opportunity to earn a behavior buck daily while school is in session. The number of behavior bucks earned daily by the students will based on the behavior number earned for that day. At the end of pay period, each student will meet with the teacher to review and total the amount earned. Then, the students have the choice to purchase items or save their behavior bucks.

Coe Lake Outdoor Science Education Class
Kelly Baumgartner, Berea-Midpark High School, Big Creek Elementary, Brook Park Elementary, Grindstone Elementary - $ 1,600
Coe Lake Outdoor Science Education (C.L.O.S.E) is a high school science elective in which Junior and Senior students not only learn the pedagogy of teaching, but also become familiar with the elementary science curriculum. Our high school students will apply this knowledge as they teach every single Kindergarten, 3rd, and 4th grade student in the Berea City School District at Coe Lake in Berea. To reduce costs to the district, as well as our carbon footprint on the planet, we ride bikes from the high school to Coe Lake. We are asking for assistance to purchase 10 new bikes as well as an adult tricycle as our class size has increased 70% for next school year. (The tricycle will be used by our special needs students who are enrolled in our course - we currently have 1 tricycle but it is in need of repair.)

Family Portfolio Night
Kristy Krajniak, Big Creek Elementary - $3,120
Throughout the year, children will collect and reflect on work, activities, photographs, and experiences to share with their families during an end-of-the-year celebration. Children will take home an art portfolio, work portfolio, and personal photo album filled with photographs of their activities throughout the year. Families will be treated to a performance from the first graders, slideshow video of the year, and the portfolios and activities shared with them.

Flexible/Choice Seating
Kerry Carney, Berea-Midpark Middle School - $1,120
Today's students have many different learning needs and sitting in traditional desks all day is not always the best option. Having flexible seating will help empower students to take ownership of the classroom and their learning. Offering flexible seating will also help build a sense of community in my classroom and on our team.

GaGa Ball
Derek Mogilnicki, Berea-Midpark Middle School - $ 4,200
Gaga ball is a variant of dodgeball that is played in a "gaga pit." The game combines dodging, striking, running, and jumping, with the objective of being the last person standing. Players contact the ball at each other with an open hand, and are eliminated if the ball strikes them on or below the knee. The "gaga pit" creates a fun and exciting atmosphere due to the unpredictability of the ball bouncing off the octagon walls. Games are fun, fast paced, quick, and can accommodate large groups of students of up to 30-35+. This project will provide a daily recreational opportunity for students in the middle school. 100% of the funds from this grant would go towards purchasing a high quality gaga pit that can be used for generations of students to enjoy the benefits of playing gaga ball!

Learning through Motion
Helena Kleem-Goliat, Grindstone Elementary - $860
The purpose of this project, Learning through Motion, is to use variety of flexible seating options in the classroom to benefit children with a variety of learning needs. Flexible seating allows learners to select from several seating options; such as bean bags, sit discs, yoga balls, stools, as well as traditional desks, etc. Motion allows a student to move or wiggle as he/she is learning which allows a student to be more productive. Learning in motion allows for a classroom setting to be more student-friendly, especially for students with specific learning, social, and emotional needs.

Say It Summit
LaVerne Shay Thomas, Berea-Midpark High School, Big Creek Elementary, Brook Park Elementary, Grindstone Elementary, Snow School - $800
The Say It Summit (SIS) is a safe and empowering “real talk” forum for students to get together and have courageous conversations about subjects that impact their lives – i.e. uniqueness, differences, bullying, etc. The theme is "It’s Okay To Be Different."

Taking Indoor & Outdoor Recess to the Next Level
Patricia Power, Brook Park Elementary - $ 4,500
We are looking to add extra engagement, exercise, and stimulation for our kids during indoor and outdoor recess. As it is now, many kids are just sitting on or wandering around the pavement outside, or on their Chromebooks inside (getting no exercise).

Titan Love and Care Room
Kathryn Thompson, Berea-Midpark Middle School - $ 1,000
The TLC room is a lending closet for students who are in need. The goal of this project is to replenish items such as clothing, snacks, toiletries, school supplies, and household items.

Titan Wellness Day
Dawn Sansone, Berea-Midpark Middle School - $2,500
A day of school-wide mental health and wellness programming. Students and Staff (grades 5-8) will go through sessions throughout the day that work on recognizing stress, depression, and anxiety while practicing methods to cope with those feelings. We plan to have a guest keynote speaker to kick off our event. Staff and students will be using materials throughout their session.

US Grindstone Gratitude Ship
Kristen Johnson, Grindstone Elementary - $2,807
This project will be a gratitude initiative for Grindstone Elementary that will focus on building appreciation, resilience, and connection with students, staff, and parents. Each month of the school year an activity based centered on Gratitude will be done by the students and staff at Grindstone. This corresponds with the school wide counseling theme for the year.
