Teachers and Staff support students through Grants
In addition to Enrichment Grants, The Education Foundation manages grants funded entirely by BCSD staff members who want to support our students. Employees generously contribute money to the Payroll Deduction Grant fund through small, elective donations from each paycheck. Staff members and students may apply for these grants to pay for educational opportunities not available elsewhere within the District.
The Foundation's Payroll Deduction Committee meets twice yearly, once in April and once in October, for grant selections. The application for our spring Payroll Deduction Grants will be available at this link in March.
The following programs were selected in this autumn's Payroll Deduction Grant round, in which $2,625 was awarded. Thank you to all of the BCSD employees whose contributions make these projects possible.
Memory Garden: Mulching and Seating $425
Staff: Jane Darrow BMHS
The BMHS Memory Garden was established after a series of tragic losses in our community. Students expressed a desire to have a space to honor the memory of those no longer with us, and the Memory Garden is the result of that wish. This grant will fund additional seating to allow more students to utilize the garden, as well as mulch to maintain the area.
Realizing Your Potential (RYP) $600
Staff: Susan Malone
BMHS
RYP strives to increase member self-confidence, improve resiliency skills, enhance social relationships, and improve academic motivation and school attendance. The program offers supplemental support like study tables, Real Talk forums for students and parents, social/community events, volunteering opportunities, job shadowing, tutoring and college or workforce tours and informational workshops/meetings. Grant funds will allow RYP to present a series of three etiquette workshops. Proper behavior can make a profound and positive difference in one's life and provide distinct advantages in every day interactions.
Finger Fiddles (Fidget Toys and Sensory Relief Tools) $1,000
Staff: Cara McGregor
Brookview Elementary
This grant will fund fidget containers for each classroom/special area teacher so that they will be available to students as needed. Sensory tool kits are essential for many of our students and they rely on them throughout the day to help them reduce stress and improve productivity. Fidgets help improve concentration and attention to tasks by allowing the brain to filter out the extra sensory information. This will also provide a break for students in a quiet manor in the classroom without distracting others around them.
Kindergarten Outdoor Learning Classroom $600.00
Staff: Amy Murray
Grindstone Elementary
This grant will fund the purchase of educational materials to be used as an outdoor learning classroom in the Grindstone Elementary courtyard. The project will provide meaningful and educational outdoor learning experiences for kindgergarten students. Students will be able to expend age-appropriate energy that is typically deemed too loud or messy for indoors.
Total amount granted: $2,625
Total students impacted: 2,500
