The Dottie Bowers & Rhoda Rosen Fund:
The "Slumber Party" Library Grant
REASON ESTABLISHED:
A “Slumber Party” Grant was established in 2020 in memory of Dottie Bowers and in honor of Rhoda Rosen. Friends and family of these wonderful ladies raised over $1,000 for preschool through early elementary library programming. With the passing of Rhoda on October 4, 2022, this grant will now be in memory of both women. Rhoda was the former staff librarian of Big Creek Elementary, longtime host of the BCSD-TV “Community of Learning,” and occasional host of the Foundation’s Annual Auction. Rhoda was Dottie's best friend and together they were quite the team! Dottie ran the Fairwood Elementary library for many years. After retirement, Dottie worked for a bookstore where she dressed in costume, had a "magic bag" of books to read to customers, and was known as "The Book Lady". Rhoda continued to perform onstage in area theatres and go into schools for educational performances. Both Dottie and Rhoda were inducted into Berea City School District's Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003 (Dottie) and 2005 (Rhoda). AREAS of ELIGIBILITY: BCSD preschool and elementary library staff members are eligible to receive funding from this grant, which places special emphasis on story time and library theater. |
