Winter 2019
BCSD Staff provide $3,310 for classroom projects
Payroll Deduction Grants are awarded twice per year and are funded by donations from BCSD staff members. Thanks to the District’s dedicated staff, the Payroll Deduction Grant committee was able to fund all of the following projects in October:
Unique, Engaging, (Reusable!) EL Resources
$375
Big Creek, Brookview, & Grindstone - Patricia Power
Writing and reading are often the most difficult parts of learning a new language. Portable learning centers with reusable write & wipe materials will help engage English learners in grades K-4 throughout our district.
Sensory/Activity Hallway
$350
Big Creek Elementary - Shannon Lazarus
A Sensory Kindergarten Hallway will allow young students a multi-modal brain break. It will give them the opportunity to explore and reset in a way that serves them best, and help them to be more focused upon returning to the classroom.
Team Seekers Year Long Olympics
$400
BMMS - Melissa Meyer
Students will be motivated to compete against enrichment team classes in an Academic Olympics. This will be a cross-curricular challenge encouraging all students to do their best throughout the school year. Parents will be invited to attend a year-end recognition ceremony celebrating students’ success.
Table Tubs Expansion STEM/Literacy
$580
Grindstone Elementary - Tami Arthur
Three classrooms of students at Grindstone begin the day with Table Tubs. This is an important time where they learn to work together, share, take turns, problem solve, construct, and practice literacy skills like making words with manipulatives. The grant will expand materials available in existing Table Tubs.
Jolted Java & Smoothies
$500
BMMS - Nicholas Hall, Caitlin Meier, Tracy Gretick
The Jolted Java & Smoothie cart will provide special education students an introduction to the food and drink service industry. Students will learn to make and serve refreshments and to make change for customers (BMMS staff). Grant funds will purchase start-up materials for the enterprise.
Morning STEM Tubs
$550
Brook Park Memorial - Erin Blatnica
Morning STEM Tubs are high interest, hands-on activities that keep students actively engaged while preparing to start the day. Hands-on STEM manipulatives provide opportunities for problem-solving, creativity, social skills, and teamwork.
Hatching Chicks
$380
Brook Park Memorial - Amy Sachdeva
Students will learn about life cycles and the basic needs of animals as they hatch chicks in the classroom. They will learn how to be respectful and responsible for living things and develop an appreciation for animals.
Chick Hatching Support
$175
Grindstone Elementary - John Kruggel
Kindergarten Life Science educational standards state that living things grow, reproduce, and have specific needs. This grant will fund fertilized eggs and food to continue Grindstone’s yearly chick hatching project.
